How To Choose The Perfect Dining Table For Your Home

Dining tables used to be just for eating but, with time, have evolved and become a piece of furniture with multiple uses. They have transitioned into a place to work, a place to gather and reconnect, or a place to enjoy family activities like arts and crafts with the little ones. Nowadays, dining tables are one of the essential features of our home, so much so that it has been proven that they provide significant benefits to the household.

For instance, according to Family Therapist Dr Reenee Singh, “families who eat together around a dining table are likely to be closer.” And as Registered Nutritional Therapist Samantha Paget notes, “people are more likely to eat nutritionally balanced food at the dining table as it provides a focal point and encourages individuals to pay more attention to what, when and how they eat.”

So, knowing the significance of this furniture piece, how does one go about finding the perfect dining table for their home that will last a long time, serve the family’s needs and lifestyle, and match their taste? When it comes to choosing a dining table, there are numerous factors that can be overwhelming, but we are here to help! We’ve put together this simple yet effective easy-to-follow guide to help you get through it!

1. Asses the space

The first step is to measure the space you have reserved for your dining table, in order for it not to be either too small or too big. The perfect separation between the table edge and the wall is between 80 cm and 100 cm.

2. Time to choose the right dining table

The second step is to decide how many chairs will be placed throughout the table. If you enjoy entertaining, it’s important that your guests can sit comfortably while still having enough room. These rules will help you find the optimal table based on the number of people who will be seated around it:

Rectangular / Oval table dimension Comfortably seats
80×60 cm 2 people
120×80 cm 4 people
180×90 cm 6-8 people
250×100 cm 8-10 people

Round table dimension Comfortably seats
100 cm diameter 4 people
120 cm diameter 5 people
140 cm diameter 6 people
160 cm diameter 7 people
180 cm diameter 8 people

3. Dining table shapes

For every room dimension, there is a proper table shape. And every table shape has its own set of advantages.

  • Rectangular tables have a linear shape that allows plenty of room to walk around them.
  • Square tables are ideal for seating groups of four or fewer people. The good thing about this shape is the intimacy it provides, as it places everyone at the table within close, conversational distance of one another.
  • Round tables enable everyone seated to see and communicate with one another, and they feel casual because there is no head of the table.
  • Oval tables have very similar traits to rectangular tables but excel at one particular thing because of their rounded corners: they create a unique visual interest.

The rules

  • Rectangular dining room, rectangular or oval dining table.
  • Square dining room, square or round dining table.
  • Irregular dining room, round dining table.

4. The material selection

Choosing the best material for your dining table can be complicated. Here are some considerations to keep in mind for some of the most common materials:

Wood

The most common dining table material is wood, as it is a classic, durable material that looks beautiful and meets most needs. While solid wood is the most expensive option, there are a few less expensive options, such as teak and acacia.

Glass

Because glass tabletops create a sense of openness, they are ideal for small spaces. However, one of the main issues with this material is that it shows every fingerprint, so it may not be the best choice if you have small children. If you rather avoid chips and scratches and are willing to wipe them down frequently, a glass dining table can last for years.

Stone

Stone tables are both sturdy and beautiful and typically made of marble or quartz composite as they are appropriate for both contemporary and traditional settings.

The dining table is a big purchase that requires a significant decision. We hope these guidelines assist you and make it easier for you to select the ideal one for your home and lifestyle.
